The MEOP portal, launched today, is making freely available for the first time years of data on the remote and harsh parts of the planet, which are virtually inaccessible to man. Creatures such as the seals, naturally inhabit icy, remote seas - places which can be very difficult for human beings to visit and monitor. Seals have helped creating one of the world’s largest databases of information on some of the harshest environments on the planet. More information on the Coriolis website.
The 8 double-handed crews of the Barcelona World Race (non-stop, unassisted race around the world) set sail on December 31st 2014. They left for a circumnavigation from Barcelona and back, putting the capes of Good Hope (South Africa), Leeuwin (Australia) and Horn (Chile) to port and the Antarctic to starboard.
In March 2012, the agencies involved in Mercator-Ocean requested the Scientific Council GMMC to organize a scientific foresight exercise covering different fields of national operational oceanography, with the aim of reaching a common understanding of the issues, objectives and research sites to drive in the next 10 years, taking into account the European context and the investments already made in the field over the past 15 years.
A prospective steering committee was established and held a series of workshops and conferences for a broad scientific community. The committee prepared a draft outlook report on the basis of these works, the report that was submitted for review to the community between July 19 and September 28, 2013. A final report was then prepared on the basis of this review by the steering committee.
